When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with their government, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s creator entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of their fellow citizens requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all people are created equal, that they are each individually endowed by their creation with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, the pursuit of Happiness, and Responsibility towards their fellows—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted by the People, deriving their just powers only from the continuing consent of the governed,--That, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to express their beliefs and rights in the …
