Carly Pierson’s July 13 editorial urging repeal of the Second Amendment (https://venturacountystar-ca.newsmemory.com/?publink=0d7c4b7ae_134854d) argues that we can’t be safe “without doing away with guns entirely”, that the Founders intended that civilian possession of firearms was only meant to enable conscription of a well regulated militia to protect people “from the tyranny of professional, full-time militaries”(she provides no historical references to support this allegation), and that our passage and revocation of the 18th Amendment is a good example of doing away with an “archaic constitutional amendment holding Americans hostage in their own country”. This thinking, enacted, deprives law-abiding citizens of their ability to hunt, to target shoot, or to protect their home, selves, family, and other members of the community from criminals who care not about the rule of law.
