Convenient Totalitarianism: Executive orders run amok

Dan Becker and Scott Hochberg’s commentary, “Plan to cut pollution is wimpy”, is shocking in its audacity.  Governor Newsom (and our President) is not an autocrat, empowered by the California or U.S. Constitutions to make law or rules.  He is the state’s chief executive officer, charged by the voters with carrying out the laws duly passed by our representatives.  CARB is likewise a bureaucracy empowered to carry out rules and regulations that fulfill, not exceed, the laws passed by our legislature.  Our state Assembly and Senate (as well as Congress) have been progressively deferring more and more of their responsibilities to the Executive Branch, and bureaucracies irresponsible to anyone.  Totalitarianism might be convenient for immediate gratification but is anathema to our republic.
